Proverbs 13

10 Where there is strife, there is pride,
but wisdom is found in those who take advice.

13 Whoever scorns instruction will pay for it,
but whoever respects a command is rewarded.

18 Whoever disregards discipline comes to poverty and shame,
but whoever heeds correction is honored.

20 Walk with the wise and become wise,
for a companion of fools suffers harm.

24 Whoever spares the rod hates their children,
but the one who loves their children is careful to discipline them.
— Proverbs 13

Why is it so difficult to take correction? Whether from a parent, a co-worker, a friend, or especially a spouse, accepting correction is grueling.  Solomon understands this and really hones in on this point in Proverbs 13. Where there is strife, there is pride. Ouch! The truth hurts.

In this time of isolation, when we are stuck at home with our family all day, every day, there has been a lot of strife. I know pride is the cause of much of it.

These five verses in this chapter all point to the wisdom of accepting correction, giving correction and walking with those who have much to teach us.

The consequences laid out by Solomon are quite strong: poverty, shame, strife and harm for those who reject the correction and guidance of the wise. The strength of his words in regard to withholding discipline from our children is also strong; it is akin to hating them!

Discipline is so difficult, on both the giving and the receiving end!

Solomon has equally strong words for those who accept correction; wisdom, honour and reward.

So why is it so difficult to choose to accept correction? Why would we choose strife, harm, poverty and shame over wisdom, honour and reward?

Pride!
