“8 The wisdom of the prudent is to give thought to their ways,
but the folly of fools is deception.
12 There is a way that appears to be right,
but in the end it leads to death.
15 The simple believe anything,
but the prudent give thought to their steps.
18 The simple inherit folly,
but the prudent are crowned with knowledge.
29 Whoever is patient has great understanding,
but one who is quick-tempered displays folly.
30 A heart at peace gives life to the body,
but envy rots the bones.
”
The more I read these Proverbs, the more I want to read these Proverbs! The words of this book truly are life. I’ve read them hundreds of times but never with this much intentionality. Never in a time that requires so much wisdom. This pandemic and our government’s response to it is truly bizarre.
Chapter 14 is particularly meaningful at this time. Slow down and think says Solomon. Don’t believe everything you here. The folly of fools is deception.
If we are to lead in this time of crisis we must give thought to our ways as Solomon repeats in these verses I have highlighted. We must be patient and seek truth. We cannot simply follow the path that appears to be right, inheriting folly from those who lack wisdom. If ever there was a time to seek first the kingdom of God, it is now!
In the midst of this chaos I love the instruction of verse 30, “a heart at peace gives life to the body.” When I was younger I used to love a good fight, I was always quick to share my opinion and advocate for my way. Sometimes I still fall into this. But mostly now, I just want peace. It really does give life to the body. The constant back and forth bickering of our world physically wears us out. It is unhealthy for our physical bodies.
The apostle Paul’s guidance in Philippians 4:6-7 comes to mind daily, “Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.”
